Nearly 1,500 demonstrators, out of hundreds of thousands, have been arrested since last week, but there have been few reports of violence.
"Most protesters expressed dissent in a peaceful fashion," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. "There are a minority who engaged in unlawful activity."
Organizers dubbed the day "A31, the Shout Heard Around the World."
